History/Background
Established in 1987, Digital Telecommunications Phils. Inc.
or DIGITEL is
majority-owned by JG Summit Holdings Inc., one of the largest
and most diversified conglomerates in the Philippines. DIGITEL
continues to be the second largest provider of wirelines in the
country in terms of working lines. Through 675 regional and local
exchanges, DIGITEL telephones are now available in 276 towns
and cities throughout Luzon. As of December 31, 2002, DIGITEL
had a total of 624,606 installed lines and 403,000 working lines.
In September 2001, DIGITEL’s wholly-owned
wireless subsidiary, Digitel Mobile Philippines, Inc. (DMPI),
was established to provide wire and wireless public and private
telecommunication services. DMPI was granted a congressional
franchise to construct, install, establish, operate, and maintain
telecommunications systems throughout the Philippines through
RA 9180 on December 11, 2002. The National Telecommunications
Commission (NTC) approved on August 28, 2003 the application
for authority to assign and transfer the operations and maintenance
of the nationwide Cellular Mobile Telephone Service (CMTS)
from DIGITEL to DMPI.
DIGITEL began development of its cellular network
in 2001 and contracted with Alcatel as its vendor-of-choice
for the roll-out of Phases 1 and 2. The digital cellular network
is compliant with Global System for Mobile (GSM) standards,
operating in the 1800 MHz frequency band with access to 15
MHz of frequency. In addition, the network can handle millions
of text messages per day, and is fully enabled for General
Packet Radio Service (GPRS) applications. Phases 1 and 2, with
681 cell sites, covers the Metro Manila area and key cities
nationwide. The Company’s
Phases 3 and 4 expansion project will bring total cell sites
to over 1,200. As of December 31, 2003, DIGITEL’s wireless
network had a capacity
to serve approximately one million subscribers. The Company will
continue to increase its network capacity to correspond with
the expected subscriber growth.
On March 29, 2003, DIGITEL commercially launched
its wireless mobile services under the SUN
CELLULAR brand. SUN CELLULAR offers the latest in GSM technology,
provisioning voice services (local, national, international calls),
messaging services (short text or multi-media messaging), outbound
and inbound International Roaming (currently available in selected
countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America), and Value
Added Services (like SUN CELLULAR’s navigational menu called “the
Mall’). Consumers have a choice from five (5) Postpaid
Plans: Plans 250, 350, 600, 1000, 2000, and 3500, with the option
for personalizing profiles namely i-Speak (for heavy voice users),

are available in P50, P150, P300 and P500 denominations. Prepaid
