Christian Conquers Indonesia
Christian Bautista may have been left holding straws after losing in the ABS-CBN Star in a Million tilt, but the charming 23-year old tenor has spun his losses into gold, and double-platinum material. A hugely successful self-titled debut album, three power ballad singles and lovelorn music videos, and countless TV appearances later, Christian has emerged as the Philippine’s favorite swoon-worthy heartthrob.
Now that he has conquered an entire archipelago, Christian’s crooning his way into Indonesia, and even Malaysia, 20,000 school girls at a time. During his four-day stay in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta last November, Christian was besieged non-stop by requests for autographs, pictures, magazine photo shoots, and music video tapings, on top of being one of the main highlights at Indonesia’s annual Señoritar festival. The response at Señoritar was astounding, as an entire arena sang along to Christian’s renditions of “The Way You Look at Me,” “Hands to Heaven,” “Away from You,” and Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up.”
Prior to his arrival in Jakarta, Christian’s single, “The Way You Look At Me” has already dominated Indonesia’s airwaves for six weeks. “Everybody here seems to know the song by heart,” exclaims a Warner Music Indonesia’s executive (interviewed by Ricky Lo for his Philippine Star Fanfare column). Christian himself is bowled over by the star treatment he received, “I am really honored and privileged to know that my songs are doing well in Indonesia,” he says.
Warner Music Philippines managing director Ricky Ilacad attributes Christian’s success to his lover boy appeal. “Indonesia is not so different from the Philippines, they’re also into love songs,” he explains. “Christian is doing love songs, which is universal, appeal niya maganda, and he has a good command of English. I think that sets him apart. Indonesia’s looking at Christian as a local priority on a long-term basis. He’ll truly have a big day in Indonesia.”
While Christian’s all set to become Asia’s newest male pop idol, back home, he’s readying another heart-piercing assault on the Pinoy masses with his latest single, “Kailan Pa Ma’y Ikaw.” This will be Christian’s first Filipino ballad, and you can be sure he’ll be conquering hearts and charts yet again with this amazing vernacular number.
“Kailan Pa Ma’y Ikaw,” “The Way You Look at Me,” “Hands to Heaven,” and “Colour Everywhere” are included in Christian’s eponymous debut. The double-platinum selling album is distributed by Warner Music Philippines and is available in leading music stores and record bars.
